Chapter Sixteen

Skye got into her car and headed to Holly’s to pick her up for the party. She pulled her Kia into Holly’s circular drive, put the car in park, and fluffed her hair. Looking forward to the Fourth of July party, she let out a happy exhale. She assumed Rob would be there, and she was looking forward to seeing him and to testing the waters of their relationship.

She’d wanted to before, but she usually saw him at her place when they were focused on healing and it didn’t feel appropriate. While she wanted to help him heal, her interest in him went deeper. Tonight, she would determine if he was interested in her that way, too, or if he was only looking for healing and friendship.

She had one foot out her car door when Holly flew out of the house and skipped down the porch steps. The party would be good for Holly, too. It was obvious that she and Curtis were still in love…and Skye hoped they would figure it out soon.

Holly opened the back door of Skye’s car. “Hello!”

“Hey, cuz,” Skye said.

Holly put her container of potato salad in the bag with Skye’s macaroni salad before sliding into the passenger seat.

Skye gave her cousin a quick once-over. Holly had on a flag tank top and a short denim skirt. “Cute and patriotic.”

“Thanks.” Holly smiled. “You look good, too.”

Skye pulled around the circle and made her way down Holly’s long drive. “Thanks.” She had on a light blue sundress and flag hoop earrings in honor of the holiday.

Glancing at Holly’s wistful expression, Skye contemplated how to nudge her cousin into taking a chance with Curtis. “Theme of the day,” she said, pulling onto the main road. “Embrace uncertainty.”

Holly choked out a laugh. “That sounds like you, but not me.”

Skye understood Holly’s caution. Growing up, Holly had craved roots. She’d finally found them after her parents had settled in Johnson Village. But her folks had regularly talked about getting back on the road, and Holly had known they could uproot her at any moment.

Holly’s childhood experiences had left her with a deep need for stability. She was probably hesitant to let Curtis in because she was afraid his career would cause her to be uprooted. Regardless, she needed to find a way to overcome her fears or she and Curtis would never have a chance of success. It seemed like every time Holly took two steps forward, she would get scared, make excuses like, “he’s not interested,” and take a giant step back.

Life was full of unknowns. Skye’s approach was to dive in headfirst and see what happened. Sometimes she got rejected, and that was okay. Those relationships weren’t meant to be. It was worth it, because other times, magic happened.

She had put out an intention for magic tonight…for her and for Holly.

But Holly was cautious, so Skye offered a small step suggestion. “Why don’t you get to know the man Curtis is now without pressuring yourself to figure out where your relationship is headed?”

Holly looked out the passenger window.
